Okinawan Play Performance in March

     Historical Play"Agari Tachikumu"

[Synopsis.]

Okinawa was once an independent country called the Ryukyu Kingdom. When Japan changed from the Edo period to the Meiji period, the Japanese government, pushing for national unification under the Emperor system, sent officials to Shuri Castle, ending the 450-year history of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

A fierce struggle was repeated between Kamekawa, who opposed the Ryukyu Kingdom becoming a part of Japan, and pro-Japanese  Giwan, but Kamekawa was unable to stop the flow of time, and Shoutai, the king of Ryukyu, was taken away to Tokyo. The performance depicts a man who continued to wish for the survival of the Ryukyu Kingdom despite being tossed about by the stormy waves of the times.
