Lyric dance-drama "Story of Shuri Castle"

Story

It is the eighteenth century, and the King of the Ryukyu Kingdom has ordered odoribugyo (dance magistrate) Tamagusuku Chokun to bring Jira, a young man who is a good dancer, from Yanbaru (area in northern Okinawa) to Shuri in order to create a new art form. Leaving his fiancee Nabi behind in his hometown, Jira practices hard at Shurijo Castle, but when he meets Umitugani, a priestess serving in the Uuchibaru (the residential quarters in the castle for priestesses), he and Umitugani become attracted to each other. However, their illicit love affair awaits an unexpected ending. Chokun's passion and a sense of mission for the creation of a new art form that led to his struggling over the creation of a tragedy and overcoming various difficulties resulted in the birth of a new art form, the “Kumiodori.”
